Monumental Limestone Chimneypiece with Heraldic Overmantel

A monumental reclaimed limestone chimneypiece that rises far above the shelf line. The overmantel is carved in high relief with a helmeted shield held by two rampant supporters, framed between tall blocked pilasters under a projecting cornice. The frieze carries the carved inscription VERUM AMORIS AUDACIA, and the lower pilasters are cut with slender lancet panels. The deep square opening is lined with herringbone brick above a broad raised stone hearth. Weathered grey and cream stone gives the piece real gravity. Made for a great hall, estate or grand architectural renovation.
